Does it have to be a pair?

Honestly if your looking for Low and Loud then I would go with a pair ported, 30hz is a good note. If space is an issue maybe a single 18 or a super sub single 15. Also if you look around there are subs that require minimal space like the revos so maybe a ported set is in your future if you scrape up some cash. BTW a sealed enclosure will not outperform a low tuned enclosure on the downlow, just cannot do it regardless of the size, shape or design. A sealed enclosure can have a flatter responce but a WELL designed ported enclosure can achieve a smooth rolloff and get louder... JMHO..Polo.

it's that "well designed ported box" that worries me. it doesn't have to be a pair, just anything less than 7 or 8 cubes including port

Low and loud is one of the hardest things to pull off in car audio.

if your having a hard time hitting low and loud with those two 12 ssd's your not going to have an easy time doing it better with another pair of 12's and id think it would be harder with a single 18....to really hit low and loud your going to have to do testing and find out what works best in your vehicle
