ok well did a little bit of testing on them tonight.

setup
86 subaru wagon
stock battery under hood and 4dp battery in back =( (waiting on rd batteries)
200 amp alty 115 at idle
2 x 3250.1s
1 elite spl v.2 15

ok well voltage started at 14.7 volts and took a nasty drop to 10.8 =(

but i squeezed 4856w @ 3.75 ohms with them strapped. 72hz was my test tone.

sub was wired to 1.6ohms

not too bad for the imp being so high, and crappy batteries

im hopin to ee a huge gain when i wire down the sub and have beter batteries in there. the bats i have have horrible discharge rates and a very high esr. =(

How exactly did you do the tests?

What DMM's?
Peak hold or watching to see where they settle?

oooppss should have said. I used some craftsman dmms and a craftsman clamp meter. clamp meter was on hold and I watched the dmm as when burped iti had a constant reading...

I forget anything else? =(

No offense intended to hunterw but:

If there was no o-scope involved, this "test" is effectively useless as you have no way to know much the amp was clipping.

I don't know why so many people do not understand how to properly test amplifier output. Maybe it's b/c most don't have the equipment or knowledge to do it.

I think its funny that everyone thinks that they are clipping....even if it was clipping I wouldn't see a HUGE increase in power anyway.....I think im going to buy an oscope as I guess im not legit without one.

" even if it was clipping I wouldn't see a HUGE increase in power anyway "

You certainly would...... crank the gain all the way up and the amp will clip like hell, and appear to produce WAY more power than it actually can.

But even if you had used a scope, this test would still be wildly inaccurate as you used speakers as the load. Speakers are a reactive load, you need a resistive load for this test. (reactive = impedance (ohms) changes based on the frequency. resistive = Resistance (ohms) remains constant.)

Give this page a read

http://www.bcae1.com/measpwr.htm

and pay particular attention to the last paragraph and chart to see why speakers won't work.

the way hunter tested them in the car is real world power. actual rms. the way your talking about is bench testing

Ok, if you wanted to know how much power the amp could do while playing one specific frequency you could use speakers, I'll give you that. But that will only be valid for those specific speakers. Use different ones and you will get different results, so it doesn't really tell anything about the amplifiers maximum output.

But the lack of o-scope measurement still makes the test completely invalid as there is no may to know how much the amp was clipping, if at all.

well I think its understood from Hunter's details that it isnt a attempt to clip the amp to create inflated numbers and I agree it might not be 100% accurate like an o-scope might be but it is at least a good reference point

That is true, if he just listened for clipping by ear, it could be a good general reference.

But, since the amp needs to be clipping by a substantial amount before you will even hear it (with low frequencies), the numbers are far from accurate.

One thing to keep in mind is that a lot of competitors clip when they're burping. Isn't that interesting?

haha and actually the signal is clean. i have tested and tested. and no i wont see a huge differnce in power if its a clipped signal or not. i dont gain anything on the tl, not even a tenth of a db from clean to clipping. and this was in my car, c mon ms read my posts man! though this test isnt meant to prove how much power the amps do, or how bad.a.ss they are, this was just a test to see what i was getting at what impedence. thats whats important to me. and just thought id share it. but i am still oing to buy a o scope just to have one around.

Well if thats the case you can disregard most of what I said. It sounded like you were claiming these numbers to be a test of how much power the amps could do.
