What happens to subwoofer output during balance and fade?

Depends on the devices used in the system.
Some crossovers have a 'non-fading' subwoofer output. In this case the total signal to the sub will drop a little when you balance/fade but it will never completely fade out.
In some systems, the subs are a combination of the two front OR rear channels. In this case, fading away from the set that drives the subs will result in the subs fading out completely.
