yellow top.....

Dual-purpose

* Deep cycling and cranking power all packed into one battery.

Longer life

* Lasts up to 2 times longer than traditional flat-plate batteries.

Higher reserve capacity

* Constant performance quality, which keeps your battery running at the same level even as it's being discharged.

Optimal starting power

* More power in the initial 1, 3, 5, and 10 seconds of the starting process than comparably rated conventional lead-acid batteries.

Longer shelf-life (lower self-discharge)

* Ideal for seasonal use, fully charged it can sit unused for up to 12 months at room temperature (or below) and still start a vehicle.

Vibration resistance

* 15 times more resistant to vibration than traditional lead-acid batteries.

Leak-proof

* Mountable in almost any position.

yellow top will produce a lower cranking amperage lower than the red top, but the yellow top will keep his amperage output stable thats why is good for everything except starting and is also a deep cycle battery

the red top is a starting battery it means that will push more amps from starting than the yellow top but the amperage will suddenly drop dramastically .

for example the yellow top when you start it from the hood it will push around 800-750 amps MAX and will keep pushing 750 amps as long as the voltage dont drop and a deep cycle it means it can get discharged and recharged lots of times..

and the red top at cranking will push around 1200-1000 amps in 5 seconds but then the amperage will drop to around 750 as long as voltage dont drop. but then the red top is not a deep cycle batterie..

i have both and im really think that if you got a good charging and you dont plan on draining them alot the red ones are better than yellows.

what i did was put one red top under the hood for starting and two yellow tops in the back. people say dont mix batteries and is true if the batterie are alot diferent like some batteries rest at 12 volts others at 13 umm some batteries are 12 volt others are 16 etc... but the ooptimas are very similar other than the deep cycle technology and the starting.

No..... red top is the one you want for car audio. It releases power faster than a yellow top which is what helps you.

That is if you have to get an optima. There are much better batteries out there for car audio purposes such as Kenitik or Odyssey. I recommend the latter.

M.S. - but wouldnt a red drain faster and potentially damage your amp. Wouldnt the yellow be more reliable?

BTW i have no previous knowledge of either.

You WANT the battery to release power as fast as possible. When the engine is running it will get recharged right away.

The only advantage of the deep cycle battery is that it can be drained and not damaged. The only time that would ever be useful is if you played the system for a long time without any type of charger on the battery (alternator, battery charger, etc.)

Non deep cycle batteries are almost always more powerful.

The exception is the Odyssey batteries. The provide a ton of power AND are deep cycle capable. The best of both worlds so to speak.

Oh, ok. So when the car is on, a red top would be better.

You would need to use an isolator for that which I don't recommend doing. Just replace the battery you have now.
