What To Buy First?

Ok people, yesterday I just got a refund check from my college for $1900. $1000 of this money is going to paying off my car loan and $300 is going into a new Ipod for my g/f which leaves me $600 left on top of a $200 I already have saved up.

Now that I have money for the amp I want, ive been having second thoughts onto if I should buy it right now or not. My reasoning for this is because I know im going to have to do the Big 3 and buy a bigger battery.

Do you guys think I should just see how my car will hold up with out any electrical upgrades or should I just upgrade them right now?

If anything you will need a biggger alternator not battery.

How much much power is this amp?

Well joe, the best thing is to upgrade ASAP, for example, you can buy an alternator and a good amp, then save up for subs. If you get your amp, you can borrow some subs and play a lil bit

I already have my subs all ready to go. There just chillin in the basement until I get my amp. I sent in a price quote request to excessiveamperage.com for a 200amp alt but, they are on vacation or something till the 22nd.

The amp im going to grab is the ASA2000.1D since a few people on here wanted to see if that put out true wattage. The amp says it will put out 2000 @1ohm but, Im probably going to be seeing around 1600 if my calculations are right about PowerBass (20% overratted).

Even though I don't need the battery, I think im still going to grab a new one anyway since the one I have is pretty beat. Still the stock battery from 96. Im not even sure what the CCA is on it.

Do yourself a favor with the alternator and get it from, well, pretty much any brand that's not EA

Powerbass ASA amps do around %80 of rated power and the Powerbass XA amps do rated power.

Between the alt I posted above and this alt: http://www.db-starter-alternator.com/Items/8156-3-200amp?

Which one would be a better pick?

LOL, just looked at both of them and they are the same alt, but the one from ebay is a CS130 and the one from db-starter-alternator is a CS130D. Does the D in the model number make a difference?

The GM CS130D is a newer, more reliable version of the CS130.

Between the two you posted I would definitely go with the one from DB as it has more idle amperage. Also I can personally vouch for the quality of that companies alternators since I'm currently running one.

I saw this when looking at the DB alt:

"For safety, we recommend installing a fused 4 gauge main charging wire to allow maximum current flow to your battery."

Should I be using the 4 gauge wire? I always thought the Big 3 was with 0/1 gauge?

They mean you need to use a MINIMUM of 4 gauge wire.

0 gauge is what is recommended for the Big 3.

Anyone know what size fuse I should be using at the battery for this amp? I tried looking for some info on the fuses that are on/in the amp but, can't find anything about it...

I'd buy something from a reputable brand but in my experience, it doesn't matter too much for example i have a friend using a Mclaren Fuse holder (crappiest ever) with 140A fuse and it's still working so i think absolute should behave 10 times better lol!

LOL, well, I just want to get something with a digital voltage read on it. Ive seen some Stinger ones at my Stereo Shop, but there nearly $50 and there really bulky.

Not yet. My order of 14ft of Kicker 0/1 gauge wire is comming Friday and I get my paycheck today :-). If I have enough money left over after I pay a few bills, im gonna go out and buy a new battery and do the Big 3 hopefully tomorrow if I have time.

FYI: A refund check from college is usually money that you borrowed that was not 100% used for your tuition. I.E. not free money, a portion of a student loan that must be paid back.

But you seem like a smart guy, I'm sure you know this already.
