Hey guys,
So i have a little bit of a problem. My setup consists of a Alpine MRP-M650 Mono Power Amplifier, two 5500 10" mtx subs, and a new alpine CDE-9881 head unit. Everything was professionally installed, and looks fine. The only problem i seem to have is when i turn the volume up the subs cut out. The other speakers are fine, the amp is still on and getting power but the speakers just stop. So im wondering if any one has any ideas on what to do?

My first steps were to take the subs back to the store and complain, but they removed them brought them inside and tested them with me standing there and they worked great. Then i went on to replace the old radio still, no change.

The wiring from the amp to the subs look securely attached and the connection at the battery is also fine, but all that middle ground in the car i have no clue.

At this point in time i have checked the amps output and it is 600 RMS at 2 ohms.

Are you turning the volume on the HU up so far (over 3/4 of the way) and then the amp shuts off?

Or do the subs just shut off randomly?

sounds like your amp might be going into protection mode. do you have the subs wired in series or parallel, and if you got them professionally installed take it back to the place that installed them and complain they should fix it for free.

Canaan: they only shut off when the volume on the HU is up more then 3/4 normally. I have also tried turning the gain on the amp up but keeping the volume on the HU low but it still cuts off.

dan rollins: how would i be able to tell if it was going into protection mode?

most amps have a light that turns colors when its in protection mode.

remember the gains not a volume control. set it, and leave it alone. is there a reason your turning ur HU up so high? if its not loud enough you need to add more power or speakers, clipping everything because you turn it up high on the HU doesnt help anything.

turn down you gain! do not turn it up, put it at like 1/2 until u can get a dmm to measure the voltage and set the gains properly.

dan: turning up the gain was just a temporary thing to see if i could get the subs to cut out with a low HU volume. right now its turned down below the half way marker.

Evan,

Its sounds to me like you are clipping (overdriving) that alpine amp.

You should not use the gain as a volume control. Those 10's will only get so loud...if you clip the amp, you are hurting both them and the amp itselt.

Is is getting hot?

canaan: the gain is set below the half way marker i dont know if that is to high. The amp is getting warm, i wouldn't call it hot though.

So i am more confused then ever guys. i just adjusted the gain, i picked a 50hz 0dB tone set everything to zero on the hu and removed positive output wire on the amp. then i set the gain to 30 v. i actually started to believe that it was fixed just because it was so loud. Then i put in my ipod turned it up to about the same volume and it cuts out. so i removed the + output for the speaker and tested it again and it was hardly reaching 20 v. any suggestions guys, im really sorry if this doesn't make much sense but im pretty lost here.

okay are you leaving the subs connected when your using the dmm? is your ipod on like 'bass reducer' eq? and one more thing is 30vol 3/4 of your HU's max volume?
what it sounds like is your subs aren't really wired 2 ohm or whatever and you're gain is too high for the 4 or 8 ohm you are giving them.

does it only happens with the ipod and not regular cd? if so are you using the ipod adapter or a regular mini to rca jack? if you are using the mini jack through the headphone jack that could be your problem.... somewhat same situation with my mp3 player till i used a cradle..

i still think they aren't wired at the ohm impedance you think they are. remember the higher impedance means less gain.

the subs appear to be single voice coil and they are wired to two ohms... so they are not wired wrong

Yes they are wired correctly, i called alpine today and after a 15 minute conversation he told me it was something inside the amp. No details, just somethings wrong inside the amp send it to one of our centers.
