what would be a better choice, 2 15 inch kicker l7's getting about 800-1000 watts rms each, or 4 12' kicker l5's getting about 400-500 rms each?

which would produce a more boom affect?

I'd go with more cone area. What kind of vehicle do you have? What is your budget for subs and amp/s?

03 expedition. i got about 40 inches in length and 44 inches in width to spare for a box in the back of the seats. well i can get l7's for 250 at a local stereo shop. so i say about 500 for the subs. and the amps im not sure. what would be a good amp for them?

for two L7's go with a kicker zx1000.1 for each. maybe even a zx1500.1 each

I vote 1500 each, easy on the gains. L5s would have more cone though, 1500 per set?

Are you set on Kicker? There is a lot better for the money, especially if you're going to spend $500 on two subs.

DO you HAVE to have 15's in a dual sub setup? I can give you a nice deal on a pair of V1 12 inch RD Alphas and a 3200 rms amp.
