Can I combine channel outputs from a head unit

Just wondering, if you're only running two speakers from a head unit (any), is it possible to COMBINE the front & rear channel outputs (std speaker-output, not pre-outs) into the same speakers? Would this damage anything, or would it give more power to the speakers (as I'm hoping)?

I've installed a system for a friend that is only using two front-speakers and it will be a long time before they can afford new equipment to add on. In the meantime, I'd like to be able to give their system a boost if possible, and this seems like it would work to me. As long as they're not using the rear-channel anyway...

I think I tried that with a deck when I first started installing. All I remember was a poof and a big puff of smoke. Well that and my dad yelling cause I just fried his radio. In other words I wouldn't try it unless you want to owe your friend a radio.
