I need 2 subwoofers,

8" or 10",
rms of 400-600 watts
dual 2 ohm.
budget is around $75-150 per sub

...From looking at specs alone, I'm not able to tell which subs are good at free-air performance.

Does anyone have any recommendations.

i know that their aren't just free-air subs...i'm looking for recommendations of subs that won't sound like garbage when thrown into a free-air situation and still keep their integrity.

Blaine is right, infinite baffle is the correct term. The Infinity Perfect is specially designed for different mounting configurations due to it's "variable-q" technology. Basically they are removable pole pieces that change the q from low to medium to high. What you want in an infinite baffle config is low q, or very high damping, so that the woofer won't flap uncontrollably and bottom out.

I would get a Perfect not only for the variable-q but because it is an awesome SQ sub for the price. But don't put too much power to it because a woofer in that config needs far less power to develop full excursion and its power handling is greatly decreased.

that sub looks good. It has one massive vent on the back of the magnet so it's a wonder why it only handles 1/4 of its max power.

Anyways,

is that sub really able to handle 25 hz - 400 hz like the specs indicate?

IB Capable Even if your application is in a rear deck or doors (or anywhere else you can put a speaker) the 11Ov.2 works fantastic in IB applications and will work well for you.
