i've got my DMM hooked up to my amp and i am trying to set my gains. the formula i got said i should set it so it reads 40v on the DMM. i've got bass boost and eq's turned off. i turn up the gain until i feel like i am doing damage to the sub and the DMM only reads about 18 or 20. what am i doing wrong?

i am using a 45 hz test tone instead of 50 hz, i didn't think it mattered that much but i guess it might...?
