josh if your HU is an alpine +10 is really 0db so it would have to be +10 just to be normal on music, when you set your gain i would set the HU to the settings you want then set the gain by ear.

No I am saying the overall Bass setting for the whole system on the HU you know like the basic Treble,Fade, and Bass functions

Sub level and bass boost are not the same thing. BB creates an unnatural peak at a specific frequency. Sub level adjusts the volume of the sub outputs. Bass boost should stay at 0, sub level all the way up when setting gain. Then, turn sub level down on songs where the bass is too loud.

Now for an EQ, you first want to turn down frequencies that are too loud before turning up ones that are too quiet, and you don't want to be adjusting anything more than +/- 3 db. Of course, if you don't have an RTA to tune your system with, an EQ ain't going to do any good.
