Well, I have a 15" ssd w/flatwind running on a kicker zx750.1. How would i know if its getting exactly 750 watts is that with the gain?
And the amp is rated at 904 watts, is that just peak?

No...that would be the actual rating.

And yes, you can calculate the exact watts going to your sub if you know the exact rating and setting your gain with a DMM.

Explain how exactly to do that. What do i need to Know, volts , amps etc. How would i put it all together?? How do i use that to figure it out?

Real easy man...read this.

http://www.subwoofertools.com/forum/setgain.asp

Basically you only need to know the exact RMS of the amp and the impedence that it puts that power out at. Then you use the DMM to get the voltage.

So, for Jamie, he wants to adjust the gain until he gets 42.9 volts output

ok, if you hooked up a weaker sub to the amp...lets say 400 rms, how would you hook it up without blowing? Because doesnt the gain have to be matched with head unit???

To be honest I am not positive. I am not an expert on gains...I was hoping that link would clear things up.

Obviously, if possible, you just run the weaker sub at 4 ohms. However, if you want 400RMS at 2 ohms, I am guess maybe you just type in 400 instead of 904 and set the gain accordingly.

If someone would care to clear up the head unit question, that would be great.

Well, reading thru that link again, I think everything is taken care of thru the DMM.

Put it like this. Two cars with the same amp and different head units. Car A is going to have to set the gain differently than car B, even tho the voltage neccesary is the same. It depends on the head unit. Make sense?

All you need to worry about is getting the target voltage. That voltage is incorperating your headunit, amp, and everything. Just hit the target and you have your correct watts.

That's why the birthsheets are so nice... Anyway, I think it involves special equipment. I never hear about individuals doing it, but maybe. I think you need to bring it to a CA dealer and I am sure they would do it.

Correct me if I am wrong.

Even when the amp is set for maximum power your sub will rarely see full power, it is a continually active load, means it varies at different frequencies not to mention box rise. Maybe one of the masters here can clear up box rise and how to calculate it, I don't compete...Polo.
