i was wondering what the differences, pros vs. cons of going with say 6 12's or a couple of 18's . assuming i use the same power and similar quality subs.both in ported box.
thanks

1st thing to consider is the $$$ & electrical needed to power either combo .......

ok and back to you rob, i would say it really depends what your looin for and what you listen too...IMO two nice 18's would be a better option because i really like lows, but if your lookin for all out SPL get a bigger setup more cone=bigger numbers. however not only will the subs cost more but more $ for wiring, power, batts, rca's, so theres a lot more to the equation which im sure youve considered. all in all i would prefer the 2 quality sub setup to 6 mid-range subs

Well you could do the math. The more air moved by the subs will give you greater SPL.

So let's say 6 12'' subs with 12mm of xmax(average excursion) that is

6 12''
pi (3.14) X r^2 ( 6^2) X 12 (excursion) X 6 (number of woofers) = 8138.88

wheras
2 18''
pi (3.14) X r^2 ( 9^2) X 12 (excursion) X 2 (number of woofers) = 6104.16

So yea the 6 12''s would be louder because they move more air.

When someone says "the 18''s will get lower", I disagree. Any speaker can play any low tone. It's the high tones you need special speakers to play. You can play both a 18'' and a 6X9 at 1hz. The difference is the 18'' will be much louder (SPL) at 1hz due to cone area.

So because the 6 12''s will have more cone area than the 2 18''s they should get just as low with more SPL.

If it was 1 12'' vs. 1 18'' than it would be a different story due to the 1 18'' having more cone area.

Damn Richard, If I had a bigger car, like a Blazer or something, I would take those MA Audio's off of your hands, but I only have an s10 with 1 MA1500XL in it.

yup thats me.

i did some testing on the ma subs today on the mic in my old single treo 18 box off 1500 watts

as the title says.

today i took out my Treo SSX's and the big ol box and put my MA Audio 1800xl in my single Treo ssx18 box in the back now. powering it off the old Fosgate 1501bd. well to my suprise i hit a better number sealed on the dash than i did in the same box with the Treo on an mtx 1501d.

Vehicle... 2000 Cadillac Escalade
box specs... 4 cubes tuned at 34hz
amp specs... 1500 at 2 ohm
sub specs... dual 4 wired to 2 ohm

with the Treo my best sealed on the dash was a 143.2

today i decided to mess around and meter it and well to my suprise i hit a 144.5 with my cheap MA Audio 18 that people said cant be loud. on music i did a 144.

so keep in mind the more expensive a woofer is doesnt mean its louder if your goin to be loud on a mic.

heres the sub
