i have two Alpine 12" type R subs, they hit 129.7 db sealed, 127.7 db ported...why is that? they were tuned to the sweet spot both times...

thanks,

alot of possibilities but ported needs more airspace than sealed so if the box wasnt the right size that can affect the outcome ....even placement of the box can change the outcome but when you port if you tune to say 35 hz you generally dont hit loudest at that frequency usually it's 3 to 5 hz higher....ported also generally gives you a 3 d boost in that frequency range but most cars hit best in the 50 to 60 something hz range and a sealed box depending on the size could also create a boost in the higer bass ranges especially if its a smaller than needed sealed box size....also you didnt say that you used a specific bass frequency Id assume you used a specific song which also throws in other possible possibilities for your lower spl score from ported to sealed

your two alpine type r's are more than up to the task. Get a box building program and run the thiel small parameters. Then you might want to test your in car bass response and out of car bass response (subwoofer box in and out of your car using a spl meter to find how much the interior of your car boosts those frequncies and chart them out on paper.) Then taylor your box to give as close to even response as possible with your box programs assistance.

to hit the higher spl levels you want to displace more air right?

well yes but thats not the only way to increase spl....placement, lowering box rise, putting the subwoofers in ideal box sizes, porting the box properly to allow sufficient airflow to aviod port resistance, sealing the box with fiberglass to get airtight seal, using bracing to avoid box flex, even matting your car to avoid body flex even adding a double face on box but some of these things are only needed under extreme circumstances.......doubling amp pwer also increases spl usually 3 db
