I've come across unexpected trunk space limitations so unfortuneatly i can't do things the way i had planned...

if i wanna port my 2 12" arsenals, i have to go less than the recommended amount of cuft, and have em' tuned higher than is ideal...how would it affect performance if they were in like 3.5cuft ported to 38hz (AA recommends 4cuft at 35hz)?? Should i just go sealed instead?

You will still yield greater performance from an undersized, stuffed (polyfill etc) box than sealed. Your borderline passive radiator territory, although not quite there its something to look into for a nice low tune.

I dont think you will be as happy with that. I built mine bigger than specs and tuned to 32Hz for my 15" arsenals and I was very pleased. IMO 38 will be too high

Without testing at least 2 boxes, its hard to guage how the subs will perform in a smaller box.

Going off specs, they should work alright, but the box has to take its size into account... and thats where it gets tricky :-)
