Rav4 Wiring Help!!!

I've installed a Sony CDX-m7815x in my 97 RAV4 but when I turn the right dial to seek an FM station the display goes blank. I have the illumination signal connected to the ignition wire. Is this OK? Or maybe I have a bad unit.
