if its got power and the cd player is not working... then its the HU. Theres no separate power supply just for the cd. Red wire run to a power source? Black wire to a known good ground?

I believe you can fry your H/U when installing into a car with a factory amp. Do you know if your firebird has a factory amp? Did you use a wiring harness or just hook up the wires?

like marc said, hook power wire to a known good power source and ground wire to a known ground and see if it works then...to make sure its not something in the cars wiring
