yeah i wouldnt worry that its ply wood iv used both for boxes. and basically dont notice a difference however mdf is easyer to work with.

your going to want to make sure and seal up all around the edges and everything with liquid nails or something of that nature

go out and buy a sheet of plywood...and a sheet of 3/4" MDF....

cut each into a piece you can hold.
now holding one by each end respectively...try to break each with your foot....bet you break the plywood first.:-)

Sh!t my box is made out of OSB, lol !

"oh .. btw.. MDF does not expand due to temp like other woods and is made not to warp .. just don't get it wet"

Ur right but it does emit toxic fumes and can be deadly breathing it in while you cut. This is one of the main reasons for either using resin or carpet to cover it. Polo..

It looks like 5/8" plywood, which is strong as st!t!!It's not a big box so flex shouldn't be a problem. As long as you don't leave your windows down overnight, moisture shouldn't be a problem as well. I'd like to know what some of you think about the resonante properties of solid wood as compared to plywood or MDF? If I were to build a box out of solid oak, would it sound better than MDF? Oh, and here is another pic.Upload

supposeably ply birch is a very good wood to use.. it resonants very well and is stronger and lighter than MDF.. but it has to be built better due to the properties of the wood allowing it to expand and contract in different types of weather

Other than the fact he used the wrong materials, the box looks very good. Lines up perfectly. Get some MDF and do the same with it, it'll look and sound good...

The poster who made that enclosure is so full of sh!t, 16 ply cabinet grade birch plywood my azz.

Yeah, right, that damn box with built with 7 ply birch, 9 ply at the most, look at the picture, count the number of wood veneer layers.

Besides, plywoods are layered in odd number's of ply's, not even numbers. Besides, the highest number of ply's in any plywood is 13 ply's - Baltic Birch Plywood and it has no void spots in the veneer layers.

wow.......just use MDF and quit trying to justify using something else. you want a strong box, use MDF.

why would you spend money on subs and amps and then skimp on the most important part of the system?????

Muddy,

I don't understand it myself.

Folks spend hundreds of dollars for car audio and then they get cheap on the enclosure.

That's like spend thousands on high end home audio equipment and hooking up a crap set of radio shack speakers to it.

BTW, that enclosure he built out of plywood is cheap CDX exterior or AC grade plywood, good for roofing and subwflooring, lousy for much else.

Yeah, that thing will resonate like a cheap harmonica.

The reason why people use cheap materials for there enclosure is because they lack experience/confidence in there box building and don't want to waste money if they screw up. Polo..:-)
