Just a Sub Amp!

Cheap-o
pardon the ignorance, but is it possible to just install a sub amp to exclusively drive a subwoofer and have the head unit's internal amp drive the highs and mids?

yeah, thats what me and my friend did wit his pioneer head unit, kenwood 800w and a pair of HE's and they pound. we did replace the factory 6x9's tho, and we ARE hooking up a amp to the 6x9's eventually

Cheap-o. Yes you can, it is a matter of sound quality. Most head units only provide 22-25 watts rms per channel and some say ther circutry is very cheap meaning sound quality and volume are greatly depleated. For better volume and sound quality by a seapreat 4ch. amp. You won't be sorry. Kicker, Mtx, and JL audio are good. and like Nick said upgrading from factory installs are the 1st thing you should for better sound.
