If a sub asks for 1 cu ft of space in a box is it bad to put it in a box that gives it 1.25 cu ft?

No, it might actually sound better (more extended, deeper bass). Most manufacturers spec a box that will produce the most output with little regard for a flat response. The OPTIMUM box is usually slightly larger.
The downside - larger boxes reduce maximum powerhandling slightly.
