Strange behavior from JL 10'' sub...

Wes
I was recently given some audio equipment, a 10 inch JL10w3 sub, and an Alpine V12 amp. My buddy and I tried installing it all and the sub started acting very strange. When we started playing some tunes the sub looked like it was breathing ...moving in and out very slowly not in time with the music and making no noise at all. We tried changing the wiring from bridged to one chanell, no difference. When we switched it to the secound channell it started playing but it would sort of cut out and only really hit like every 3 bass line. Very annoying. Is this sub screwed or do we have it hooked up wrong. any info would be great. oh yeah one more thing, on the amp it has a selector switch that says 180 or 0 and i think a 'degrees' symbol beside each number, what the hell is that all about?
