Sealed boxes are usually smaller and offer slightly lower distortion at frequencies below resonance. Ported boxes go down lower but are harder to design and will be larger. Ported boxes will also have higher distortion below resonance. The type of box a speaker goes into depends on the speaker's Thiel-Small specification. You cannot arbitrarily throw a speaker into the box of your choice. Check out The Loudspeaker Design Cookbook. Amazon sells it.
