If you're going to play with turtles, make sure you wash your hands with soap! Their skin/shell has virus/germ all over. Not good for little kids.
Other than that, they're fun to watch, especially the tiny ones, less than 1" in length.

Isaac, what makes them especially dangerous is that turtles naturally like chickens, carry salmonella and can make you very sick. Some lizards like Iguana's carry it also. The little turtles have been known to carry multiple diseases that is why they are banned for sale in certain states, including here in IL. Polo.. :-)

to the guy that bought the turtle at the mall...

IT IS ILLEGAL TO SELL TURTLES LESS THAN 4" IN LENGHT IN THE US!

All those places that sell them are breaking the law....and just selling them can result in a $1500 per turtle fine. Our farm raises 100% disease free turtles (the law in louisiana makes us have to raise disease free turtles).

We abide by the law and only sell outside of the US. (to my knowledge, turtles are the only animals raised in the US that are ILLEGAL to sell in the US)

BTW...a UNTREATED turtle carries less than 1/10th of the salmonella that an iguana would carry. (was have a professors from Ole Miss, LSU, and other colleges on our side)...and dogs can carry thousands of times the amount of disease causing microbes...but we are pretty much getting f*cked over by a few individuals high up on the chain.

We have developed a technique to make our turtles disease free from the git-go and went we get the market re-opened in the US...we will sell turtles w/ a bowl treatment. (just incase you contaminate the bowl)

lol...i have hundreds of pages on studies we have done in conjuction w/ many colleges and firms. :-)

when we do get the market open...fell free to buy as many as you want :-)

(maybe i'll be able to afford termlab then...lmao)

w/ a laso...how else :-)

but really...every day during the summer we dig the eggs and put them in trays. we then wash the dirt off of them and run them through a chemical treatment.

then put the trays of eggs in boxes w/ air holes...2 trays per box. put them in out incubating rooms. in 60 days they start to hatch...then we wash the hatchlings and count them out by hand and put them back in the trays. (we through away the eggshells and wash out the boxes)

We then put the boxes w/ 125 turtles per box back in the incubators and lower the temp...the turtles then go into hybernation.

by the way...we use Clorox by the pallet during the summer. the hair on my arms is usually bleached by June.

It is mainly a pet market. But in China, they do put them in heated tanks and grow them to ~6" and eat them.

We farm:
red ear sliders, yellow ears, king turtles (river cooters), chicken turtles, painted, moon ears, musk turtles, mississippi map...and some others.

NS. I like the mississippi map that is tight I always thought all turtles were dumb looking but all I ever seen is a bunch of land turtles a couple box turtles and one time I pulled a Huge snaper out of its hole by its tail Then when I got it on the bank my friend ziek taped it in the face with a piece of drift wood until it chomped down Hard and then he... well you probably dont want to know. I will just say this it let go.

i cant sell them man...its illegal.

we dont have any maps right now anyways...we already sold last years crop over seas. i think the map is one of the coolest looking ones re raise (other than the paints). we have like 5 or 7 sub-species of maps too, they all look just alil different.

btw...the reason they are called a map is because the bottom of their shell looks like a maze.

sub-species:

about half way thru the summer after digging eggs every day, thats pretty much what i say...lmao

but...it any of yall were local i would give you a turtle, but i cant ship them. too much BS could come out of it. we are working hard to get the market open in the US...hopfully it will be legal to sell them by this time next year.

until then...i'm still stuck at college during the sping and fall semesters and stuck on the ponds all summer. 7 days a week, but i usually get off by 5 or 6 so i get to fish and wakeboard alot. (i'm on the water at least 3days a week) plus...$7 an hour sucks a.ss :-(
