Hi,

I don't know anything at all about radar detectors, but wouldn't mind getting one from what I've heard. I wouldn't mind spending a little money to save myself from getting tickets and points removed. Anyways,,

Can radar detectors detect cops that aren't doing radar? Or do they only detect the rad gun? Also, I have read they are not illegal so thats nice. I live in canada and I don't think they're illegal. Anyways, Are they fairly easy to install? and where can i get some good information on the different kinds and such things?

thanks for your help.

Hi Adam,
Four years ago a $300 ticket ticked me off and I investigated radar units. Only had a ticket once - I turned the unit off and forgot to turn it on before getting on NY Bruckner.
Absolutely positively only one BEST unit to get, but you must pay for it, and its worth it. The Valentine ONE, yeah the one with the arrows. I love knowing WHERE the police are and it is EXTREMELY sensitive and smart. I got the little stealth remote display so only I see it - no huge red digits for police to see. In many years since its design by a brilliant engineer, nothing comes close. In my small town, the police leave their radars on all the time (as a courtesy to me?). I know they're coming and whether from ahead or behind, WAY WAY before they pass me or come close to me. Big relief. I now never turn it off. Even in a mall with huge number of radar doors (false alarms), I just turn down the volume. Check it out for yourself. (I think it's valentine1.com). I hate seeing any wires so I had mine prof installed.
In advance I'm saying "you're quite welcome".

Thanks Mitch.

I was reading more and I found out that radar detectors are illegal in ontario. So I haven't been doing anymore research since. Is a valentine one still a good idea? or will i get caught as soon as I pass a cop?

Thanks again,
Adam D

Adam,
You will not get caught as you pass a cop. Radar detectors are receivers only. For all intents and purposes, they do not transmit any signal.
I think that there is some principle somewhere that if all you are doing is detecting radio waves which are being aimed at you, you always have a right to detect them. The system is funny about that, though. They might still take it and let you bring them to court (a big time waste). If you do get one, therefore, it should be stealth. Why pass a cop at any speed with big red leds declaring "I have a radar detector". I would get one, under the principle, "I want and have a right to know what's being beamed at me". Good luck!

Hey,

Thanks for the post. Everywhere i was reading, i kept reading about cops using radar detector detectors to see who;s using radar detectors. I will not be getting one for over a month, but i will for sure look more into the legal rights now that you have mentioned that. Thanks again for your time.

go to radarbusters.com to get more info on specific detectors. there are units that have the ability to mask themselves from radar detector detectors. there are also units that jam laser detectors. if being caught is a risk then get a stealth system like the passport escort SR7. i just bought it but have yet to recieve it. it is supposed to be one of the best in the market but is a little pricey wich is why i bought it off of ebay at hallf price. install is recommended by pro but if you know how to connect wires and know how to take some panels and stuff off you car its not that hard.
