Is it required that a subwoofer box be MDF? I have a 2005 Toyota Tacoma Acess Cab with no room anywhere with the exception of under a seat and space there is limited. I'm a machinist so I was thinking about fabricating a sub box out of 3/8" thick aluminum plate that would be bolted together. It would be extremely rigid. Any thoughts?

metal will resonate pretty bad.. especially 3/8's thick and will probably sound terrible.. although of seen a home audio sub build out of 1" thick aluminum or something.. if space is tight u can always use fibreglass and get creative

fiberglass, MDF, baltic birch.. quite a few materials you can use, but using aluminum would require at least 3/4" billet aluminum with a welded seam to prevent air leaks, nd it'd weigh in around 500lbs.
For an example, see Krell's Master series subwoofer for home audio.
dual 15" subs in a 1" solid billet aluminum enclosure.
Weighs something like 800lbs and costs I forget how much but it's in the five figure range.
