ok this is for my dual 6.5" tang band abc box setup for home. if im correct, according to the12volt.com. and using their calculators. if i wanted a high pass filter on my subs of 25hz, all i would have to do is connect a 796ufd cap in series to the pos lead of the speaker?

that's a first order crossover. 6dB. way too shallow.
I'd go no shallower than 12dB/octave for subs. probably 18dB given the choice.

in fact since you're doing this as an ISF, I'd say go 24dB slope. cut it off sharply.
Otherwise you could damage the drivers.

yeah thanks glasswolf, acutally i was gonna put your name in the tread title but i though id give others the chance, but what did u mean kby ISF. i gotta read up on this stuff. ha, and does the voltage of the cap and what material its made of make a diff?

use mylar non-polarized 1% tolerance capacitors.
they'll be high quality.

ISF is infrasonic filter. (subsonic filter)

bassfishing being new to the area of designing crossovers i was wondering if you could explain how you figured out the capacitor you needed or do you have a website to teach the concept

theirs the 12volt.com and i found this site useful but confusing http://sound.westhost.com/lr-passive.htm
good luck sean. im building mine for my abc box. i want to make a highpass(used for subsonic) filter of about 29hz, glasswolf said use 24db/octave, but its real complicated and the tolerances must be more exact and since heat from the coils changes impendance, a 24db/octave crossover might acually distort the music real bad even if the crossover is made well. i think im gonna go with 18db or possibly a 12db/octave crossover.

thanks alot glasswolf, are all those completed crossover netoworks or components?

both, on that page. they have the components for building your own though if you scroll down about a page or so.. chokes are first then the caps right after. can't miss em. yellowish or light grey (I forgot) radial caps

thanks. do u know the plan for a 24db/octave crossover 12volt.com only has it up to 18 which is prolly what im going to do. and is my assumption right on the above post were 24db crover. can distort the music cus of high tolernaces and change in impendance?

I've never had an issue with steep filters, but 18dB is plenty steep to cut off those subs. that'll do just fine.
cheaper, easier to build, does the job.

PS a 24dB filter would be an adaptation of a linkwitz-riley filter. here:
