I have a 2000 Ford Taurus and im still using my factory alternator. I have a 1600 watt amp that runs my 2 12inch subs(1100 watts peak, 600 watts rms) and I just recently installed a new 200 watt head unit. Would you guys recomend that I get a capacitor? I saw a .5 farad cap at a local car audio store and was wondering if it would make my bass sound better?

Capacitors are only slightly helpful sound-wise if your system is not having power problems. If you need more power, you need to get a bigger alternator. Also keep in mind, no matter what, a capacitor puts more strain on the alternator.

However, you might not need to even do that as a new head unit might take only 4-5 amperes extra.

Thanks Jexx. Can you explain how capacitors put more strain on the alternator?

That explains it the best, simply put, your alternator has to keep recharging the capacitor as it discharges. And it takes longer to charge than discharge.
