i know most boxes are made out of MDF. but would birch be a good choice as well? they make drumsets out of birch, so i'm assuming they have good sound properties.

anybody else have information on this?

Damping of Birch isn't as good, it is more rigid, though. Basically, birch is more resonant, but with a subwoofer it wouldn't be as big of an issue.

if you're talking about birch plywood, I wouldn't do it. I would stay away from any plywood. Plywood is laid up and glued in layers and there are more chances to have imperfections and slightly loose pieces in the sheet compared to MDF.

strange then that all high end pro audio companies use 13 ply birch in all of their cabinets....

...Very strange indeed when plywood flexes and is much more porous than MDF.
