Today i saw a 1200w amp with 2 20A fuses and if i remember corectly watts are amps x volts soo....12v x 40A =480 now how the fck can that amp produce 1200 watts cleanly!!.....or is the another part of the equation missing

it determines the amount of amps that amp draws,

my friend thought his cousins sony amp put out 1000 watts just because it said 1000 watts. i toldhim there is no way it could, but he wouldnt listen.then i found this sony amp online that said 1000 watts but only put out 165x2. i printed the pic and he said that was the amp his cousin had.i really proved him wrong

welcome to the world of budget amps.

Actually - compared to some of the REALLY cheap ones a 1000w max rating with 40A fuse isn't all that ridiculous. It might sniff 1000w on a peak.

plus, just because there's a 40A fuse on it doesn't mean it can't draw 50 or 60A for a fraction of a second. It can take as much as a second for a fuse to blow at double its rated current.

so in most cases the fuse rating determines the output approximately

yup, like you can look at the fuses on Hifonics amps and see they cannot put out their rated power

it's a rough estimate at best. Like I said, fuses don't blow the instant they see rated current. An amp with 40A fuses could easily draw 60-70A for music peaks.

The old Lanzar Vibe 1200D for example had 3x30A fuses but would do over 1200w on the test bench.
