6 speakers, would this be smart?

I have a very budget system, I dont want to spend $32,000 on a sound system that melts your eardrums so people can hear me coming 15 miles away

I just want something that sounds good

now, right now, I have a 40W x 4 panasonic head unit, which is powering 2 5" speakers in the front, and 2 6x9 speakers behind the seat

I also have 2 12" 250W subs just sitting behind the seat, not wired in.

now, I wanna buy and amp, and plug it into the two RCA outlets in the back of my deck, while still powering the other 4 speakers

is this a smart thing to do? will this take power away from the other speakers? will I have to put the rear speakers thru the amp too?

please help!
thanks

is this in a truck?
if you want a really good sound quality system, forget the rear 6x9 speakers entirely.
put a good pair of 5.25" separates up front (midrange and tweeter set) and connect the two 12" subs to an amp and put them in proper enclosures.
that would make for a very nice system.
the rear speakers only serve to ruin your soundstage.
here's a little article on that:

oh, and no the amp won't have any effect on the component speakers front or rear, and the amp should be for the subs only.

keep in mind your panasonic unit is really only about 11 to 14 watts per channel in reality though
NOT 40 watts x 4. that's a peak rating and very unrealistic at that.
