Spontanous dying of interior speakers

Alpine CDA-D855 head unit.

basically I never had problems with it for a long time, then about a year ago I noticed some popping/scratching noises, and sometimes it would just completely die out(the sound).......the EQ and player keeps going, and the subs still kick, but all the interior speakers produce no sound. And then just as mysteriously, it will just turn back on. Through that year I also discovered if you hit the side of the middle console by the head unit hard, it'll turn back on often enough......I just recently moved that CD player from my old '95 GP where it had that problem, and into a '97 GP and the problem presisted.....so it has to be either the HU or something directly connected to it.

Any suggestions?

sounds like a cold solder joint in the head unit.
you could get is serviced.
