Building a tube preamp...

Just wondering what you all thought before I attempted this project. I've always liked the 'magic' tubes seem to add to music. So I came up with the idea of using a tube preamp between my source unit and the amplifier to boost the signal to ~4 or 5 volts. The design would probably be similar to a D.I. box for an instument or mic with a VU meter to measure output. So do you see any potential or is it a waste of time?

I'll be the first person on here to say that I LOVE the sound of tubes. Not too transparent, but oh so lovely. Sounds like a lot of work that I can't even begin to think about in this state of mind, but if it works, tell us about it.
