Acronym for Root Mean Square.
RMS is the process used to determine the average power output of the speakers over a long period of time. RMS is derived from an equation which produces the most mathematically accurate measure of a speaker's power output. The RMS value is often seen listed as "watts RMS" on product packaging.

The alternative to RMS is PMPO (peak momentary power output) which represents peak output measured in microseconds rather than over a long period of time.

Correct me if I'm wrong (I'm sure everyone will) but, RMS is NOT and measurement of a speakers "output". It is a measurement of how much "true" power can be input to the speaker before the speaker will play poorly or begin to fail. It is usually a measure of how much power can be applied to the voicecoil(s)without incident. A better measure of "output" would be it's efficiency, which tells how loud that speaker will play at a distance of 1 meter with a 1 watt input.
