because subwoofers are not realy made for musical volume there made to make you feel the bass and hear the bass a little

it all has the do w/ the cabin gain issue...

i dont know if anyone has ever really figured out any formula or anything to explain the "open-trunk effect"

all i know is that you can get usually get higher SPL w/ open windows and trunks...i know my L5 is alot louder w/ the windows down...

i guess the atmospheric pressure in the cabin is greater w/ window up and trunks closed...so when you open trunks or roll down windows the pressure changes and sound wave travel differently...????maybe???

you're on the right track, and yes there are fomulas to figure this stuff out.
essentially to simplify this, look at it this way:
the subwoofer(s), sitting in a box use the small enclosure behind the speaker as a volume of air to compress. the air in front of the speaker (in the trunk or cabin of the car) acts in much the same way, turning the entire car more or less into the "front" chamber of a dual chamber enclosure.
When you open the trunk, or the windows, you alter that air volume, and thus drastically affect the reaction of the driver to the air volume.
it's like taking a sub in a bandpass box, and suddenly removing the front portion of the box, then noting the change in performance when you suddenly have a ported box instead of a bandpass.
That's over-simplified, but that's what's happening, in a nutshell.
