You match the RMS ratings. Just ignore the max, it's usless really.

if you have a 1000wRMS sub, buy a 1000wRMS amp.

problem solved:-O

joe gave you one. Match the RMS rating of the sub to the RMS output of the amp. If the amps RMS rating is a little more than the sub its not a big deal. Like Joe said, peak power is basically useless.

but isnt that putting the max into the sub isn't 1000rms 2000 watts max, aren't they the same,

Forget about max... put it in a box, seal it up and throw it in the ocean... just worry about matching up the rms rating for the sub to the rms output of the amp and you will be all set

i personally prefer to leave about an additional 50% for head room (above 1000 watts though, i think 20-30% extra is more appropriate). others prefer only 80% of rms for safety reasons.
still others match amp power as close to rms as possible.

i will be pushing only 80% of the RMS to my IDMAX, b/c i don't want to go below 2 ohms on my amp, and i have read many times that the IDMAX doesn't need any more than that to reach full potential.

yah, you only need enough power to reach peak excursion (keeping in mind that RMS is a thermal rating) however not going over the thermal rating by a significant amount is always good practice.
