Hello, Ive got an 88 firebird and what to step up my speaks, however Im not to sure about how to install speaks in the front door. I know they dont come w/speaks and i took the panel off recently to for check 4 room. Mainly I want to know If i am going to need to cut thru the panel and expose the speaker to get appropriate SQ or just install them directly behind the door panel so that they are unseen,

leave doors alone and use kick pods instead.
better imaging, no cutting, stealth look.
a little more work and cost.. but worth the trade off.

But would it sound alright if I just put them behind the door panel, or would I need to cut the door panel so it isnt blocking sound?

the speakers need to be unobstructed.
find a radio in your house (like a clock radio) and stick your hand over the speaker, and press against the grille, blocking the entire opening. see how it sounds.
think of your hand like the door panel.
