You must be crazy if you are going to run a TRUE 4000 wrms amp on 4 gauge wire. But I can pretty much gaurantee that you are playing with a Sony/Boss/Lanzar/Pyle amp here, in that case 4-gauge is more than enough. Sorry bro but you are not really getting 4000 watts.

4000 watts with a class D amplifier is over 400 Amperes of current at 12 volts.
0 AWG cable is only good for 325A. 4AWG is good for 150A peak. These ratings decrease with the length of wire used.

What is the make and model of this amp you're using?

Actually the amp is HElix-Dark Blue and its 800x2 RMS buddy (for ISAAC.W). Its retails for $1,800 so its not some cheap amp. Dont know what you use.
and yeah Glass wolf heres the specs on the amp.
Cont. Power 4 Ohm 2 x 500 Watts
Cont. Power 2 Ohm 2 x 800 Watts
Cont. Power 1 ohm 2 x 1000 Watts
Cont. Power Bridged 4 Ohm 1 x 1600 Watts
Cont. Power Bridged 2 ohm 1 x 1950 Watts

I wasn't trying to be mean, but there are just too many people that come in here saying that they have a 2400w amp and it is Boss or Sony or something. In either case, you aren't really pulling 4000w, your amp is 4000w at the absolute max, like the specs say, 1950 continuous wrms @ 2 ohms bridged, more realistic. You are going to need 1/0 gauge wire, 4 gauge won't do. I'm sure you have already incorporated a HO alt into your budget also? Nice amp btw.

yeah with those specs you'll have to use 0AWG for the amplifeir straight off the battery(ies) and I'd consider going with an upgraded charging system.. at least dedicated isolated batteries, and probably a larger alternator to keep them charged, using an isolator.
that's a heck of a lot of current to draw, even for a class D amp.
I know, because I'm using three amps in my system, all class AB, and two are driving about 1300wRMS each and the third is at about 500 wRMS and I had to do that work for my own car to handle the current demands.

we do that based on overwhelming consistancy of repetition and past experience though. Look at past threads and you'll see the pattern. 99% of the time you see any mention of one amplifier producing more than about 1600 watts, with few exceptions it's some peak-rated legacy or kingwood special.
Orion's 2500D and a few others are the exception but most times people in that catagory spent so much on the amp they tell everybody exactly what they're trying to feed with the current.. haha
It just gets to be habit to make sure and to verify that people know what they're saying. It's never wise to assume they do. That gets you and them into trouble in the end. Always better to be sure.

Another problem is that a lot of times people want help but never supply enough detailed information for us to answer them accurately.. likem "How do I wire my amp and subs?" or "what amp do I need? I have subwoofers!" Then we have to spend 3 days asking them questions to milk enough info out of them to answer their questions.. and after that, they still walk away in a daze because they asked questions they weren't prepared to have answered anyway.
