i'm upgrading my power wire to my amps and i'll have a few extra feet of 4 gauge left over. my questions are, for the ho alt how many feet do i need?? can i use the 4 gauge power wire on a ho alt?? also is this the correct size for a 165a alt?? would like to save that extra 25 bucks they want for that wire. all this stuff is just getting too damn expensive, lol....thanks guys.

165A, you'll need to use 2AWG wire. That's good for up to 225A.
4AWG is only good for 150A.

you'll need to replace 3 wires.
engine to chassis ground
alternator to battery positive
battery negative to chassis ground
these three places carry the highest current capacities in the car.
