Using car speakers(10" subs) on a home theatre system

i would like to know if it is a good idea to connect my 2 10 "
subs to my home system. Will they become toasted in a month? I
already have 2 pickup truck speakers attachecd to my system and
they have worked fine (even after i have pounded them for about
a year ) they are composed of a tweeter and 8 inch subs. I am aware
that car components have 4 ohms of resistance and home stereos
are designed for 8 ohms and i figure that the truck speakers work
well because the tweet is 4 and the sub is 4. (please correct me
if i am wrong) but i would like to know if it would be a good idea
or even workable to hook up my 2 10 in subs 2 this system? sould i
get another amp and a set of tweets to be able to run these subs
safely? also when i hook up the subs in series with my truck speakers
the sound quality is dramatically reduced, is that because the
resistance is now 12 ohms? I would be eternally gratefull if somone
were to share thier knowledge on this subject.

thanx
