Is the RMS of a Mono amp split in half when 2 subs are hooked up to it?

well, sort of.

if two subs are wired in parallel, current is divided.
If they're wired in series, voltage is divided.

end result is like this:

1 mono amp, 1 4-ohm sub
(4 ohm load) 1000 watts to the sub

1 mono amp, 2 4-ohm subs in parallel
(2 ohm load) 1000 watts per sub (slightly less in reality)

1 mono amp, 2 4-ohm subs in series
500 watts per sub (8 ohm load)

wait a minute... im planning on buying an dvc alpine type r with a mono mtx421D amp... are you saying that if i had another type r later, that they will both still get 420 rms each if i wire it right?

depends on the operating range of the amplifier (2 ohm minimum?) and the coil setup for the two subs.

If the amp is 2 ohm stable, and you get a dual 2 ohm coil sub, then yes.
4 ohms from a single sub, then 2 ohms from two subs. each sub will get the same power alone or with both on the amp.

you should really learn a bit about resistance, current, and voltage.
www.bcae1.com has lots of guides on this.
