It's not determined by age of car. If your alternator is still producing close to 14v, then no need to replace it.

Get a DMM and measure the voltage with the engine off. It should be around 12.5v. Now measure it again with engine on. It should read 13.5v - 14.2v.
If you get those readings then it's fine.
