Couple of options for my system... what should i do?

I have a couple options on a system and im not sure what will be the best and the guys at circuit city have no idea what they are talking abouit so im hoping someone here can help me.

First off i have a Sony 2-Channel Amplifier (XM2200GTX) that im kind of stuck with. My options come in with my subs...right now i have a 12" mtx 7500 and it doesnt sound as good as i expected, I am thinking about either getting 2 12" kicker comp vr's or 2 10" kicker comp's. Eventually i would like to get a much better amp but im gonna have to save some money first.

Just wondering what anyone thinks will sound the best...One inal optionis my previous set of subs which are two 12" infinity referece series.

Some amp specs? You'll def need a better amp though. Are you looking for sq, spl, or sql?

Power (watts RMS into 2 ohms x channels) - 250 x 2

Power (watts RMS into 4 ohms x channels) - 200 x 2

Bridged power x channels (4 ohms) - 500 x 1

Peak power x channels (watts) - 500 x 1

heres some basic info, i took the mtx sub back and got the two 12' vr's and they sound pretty good but im not sure if im gonna stick with them. I def need a different amp though. If the music is playing constantly for a long time the amp gets hot and turns off for a few secs then turns back on, it really gets annoying.

Also wondering what type of cap i should get for this system because my head lights do dim a decent amount in the 99 ford escort. I was thinking 1 farad but just want some confirmation

You're lights doing that, means you're alternator isn't strong enough... wich is kind of hard to believe sense you're only pulling 500 watts. A cap will just hide the problem... not fix it.
You'll need a HO alt to fix that problem... especially if you might upgrade to a bigger amp!
As far as the amp getting hot then turning off, sounds like you're running too low of an ohm load. What ohms are the Kicker's you have now?

P.s a 1 farad should cover it though. 1 farad covers 1000 watts. To see how minny farads you need, you look at the peak, or max power on you're amp.

How do you have the subs wired? Is the amp bridged?
