My 1996 Cavalier has a CD player that was installed after market before i got the car. I am adding an Amp and sub to it and need access to the back of the head unit. I cannot figure out how to remove it however. And tricks I need to know.

Try removing the trim ring from the unit and pushing in the two metal tabs with your fingers, or flat-head screwdriver. What type of headunit is it?
