I'm thinking of running my TV audio output and DVD audio output into a combiner cable then into the stereo. I use the DVD player for music CD's and would like the TV to have the stereo output too. If both inputs were on at the same time would my stereo be harmed? I know a A/B splitter would be better, but I'm wondering if this is crazy or just being cheap.

Don't just hardwire 2 line level outputs - use 2 series resistors before connecting to the combined input to the next stage. See http://www.hut.fi/Misc/Electronics/circuits/linesum.html for a circuit.
