so after reading the other discussions about amp choices for the 12w7, is the jl 500/1 enough power for the 12w7 without causing damage in the long run? or is it really necessary to buy a 1000/1 ?

Go with the 1000/1 if you have the cash.There is no such thing as too much headroom.Its more common the kill a sub with an amp that goes into clipping from not enough power than burning one up with too much power.Plus it can hadle a little more than the 500/1 can put out
