Making your own cables

I was wondering if it would be possible to make your own cables for both Composite and Component hook ups. Just wondering because I have seen the connectors available seperately and was wondering what kind of wire to use with them.

Thanks for any ideas.

Essentially, for component you want 75ohm coaxial, ideally with copper braid and foil for shielding.

The foil give 100% coverage, but isn't a good conductor, copper braid gets to around 95% coverage, but is a far better conductor. With both you get good shielding.

Good quality coaxial isn't very expensive, so don't scrimp, but don't bother with anything cheesy and expensive with silver wire or silver coated wire either. The core can be solid, or stranded for better flexibility.

(nb: silver is only a slightly better conductor, and if you want better conductivity the smart thing to do is use more copper)...

Get good RCA plugs (bad ones can stuff up the cables 75 ohm impedance). Good plugs are also easier to solder too, and more forgiving of a bit of extra heat if you don't make a good job the first time around and have to redo it...

In spite of my comments on silver wire, I'd recommend silver solder over normal/lead solder too. I've also made my own fully wired scart cables too, do-able but at 21 wires a plug it gets a bit tedious.

For the money, and time I've spent, these cables here (link below) seem like good value,... the FAQ at least are helpful for making your own : ) Don't let the name put you off either

This is good stuff. I will have to check it out. I was planning on running some RCA cables in the walls and was wondering how I would run such a long wire if I couldn't make them my self.

Thanks for the help
