I just bought a 12w7 in great conditioin for $320 so I want to get a box for it.

I found this box at Ebay for $93 plus $24 shipping+ tax, looks like a good deal, It says that its built to JL specs, but its tuned to 34.5 Hz, JL recommends 32 Hz.

This box is 1.83 cu.ft. (after sub, port and brace displacement) JL recomments 1.75 cu.ft. of volume, Ive seen some people run a 12w7 in a 2.1--2.5 cu.ft box.

Anyways what do you guys think? Is this box good enough? Should I look elsewere?

If I get a custom box, what would you recommend?

Volume, dimensions, port tunning?

Should I go with JL's specs with the box being 1.75 c.ft. or should I have one built larger?

I would have it around 2.0-2.25 cubes @ 30-32hz.

But 1.75 would be fine too.

what would be the difference between a 1.75 cuft box and a 2.1 cuft box in terms of the sound they produce?

As you smaller in cubic feet you will keep the tightness and punchiness of the sub. As you go larger you will be able to achieve deeper bass but lose out on the quickness and efficiency of the sub. I have my w7 in a 2.0 cubic foot box at 32 Hz and it does well. I hit 138.5 dB on 500 rms so it gets plenty loud. It also hits the lows well also. My box however is a SQL box, which I had Bassman3 (Dustin) build for me. So if you're looking for someone to make you one, there's your man.

How does an SQL box differ from an SPL box? How are they built differently?

Tuning differentiates between a SQL or SPL box. SPL boxes are tuned higher.
