Are we talking about fine electrical circuit type soldering or simply speaker wire connections and stuff? Irons work the best for precision by far. $20 can get you a decent iron almost anywhere. The low wattage of most irons are ideal for fine circuitry. Means you won't damage the surrounding parts like chips and PC boards. If you're soldering heavier gauge metal then a higher wattage gun/iron will suit your needs. They have lead free solder but they have a higher melting point. I'm no expert but shoot for solder with a 60/40 ratio of tin and lead.

Above all. Don't breathe in the smoke vapors. Sh1t is nasty.

ditto.. if you get one with low lead youll need to use a flux to coat the wire first.. otherwise it is a pain to get the solder to stick

i just got the butane one from lowes.. it comes with attachments to make it like a gun or use just heat.. or use open flame

"simply speaker wire connections"
Is what i'm looking to do. to 1/0 wire

"i just got the butane one from lowes.. it comes with attachments to make it like a gun or use just heat.. or use open flame"

so you can use it as a Heat Shrink gun?

yes you can

for doing that thick of wire.. assuming into terminals? i'd get the butane one.. heat up the lugs along with the wire first before you apply solder

i plan on solder the wire then crimp the lug then heat up the lug and melt it?

first timer here but i just wont be working with 1/0, i'll be working with 22-1/0 lots of diff jobs need the iron to last a long time "life time of the iron"

lowes will have a blow-torch:
http://bernzomatic.com/

Just go to the plumbing section and you can buy a whole kit for cheap, just get propane it will do fine.
Oxygen or Mapp will be hotter, and honestly overkill. An iron would take FOREVER with 1/0.

This is a good buy and with a flint-striker to light it will make quick work of it.

Hardware stores carry these for similar prices.

^^^^I have 6 of those propane torches in my shop. Very budget oriented and work well. Great for soldering copper plumbing pipes and heating light gauge metal for aiding in bending.

Also great for the lazy azz backyarder starting chiminea fires.

Quentin, you will struggle with that gun trying to solder 1/0 wire. You need a heat source strong enough to bring everything to the solder's melting point. 1/0 wire is thick. You'll be "tickling" it with that gun.

"paul you talking about the torch or the gun i found?"

I have a few of those guns dude. They're good for very light "spot" soldering. You can't get the coverage you need for large jobs though. The problem is contact surface. The tips on those guns don't allow you to apply the heat very well to a large surface. Not to mention using them for any length of time tends to melt the casing on the gun.

Damn didn't know you were a plumber lol. A direct flame is the only way to get a good solder imo when it comes to 8g+.

I've owned 2 Weller guns, I think one of them was that exact model and it stopped heating after 3 or 4 uses. Hope it works out well for you, I almost bought that gun again today but I remembered my past experience and held off.
