What makes subs more or less musical...

I had SSDs but wanted more SQ so i got SI BMs. they sound awesome but aren't really musical. What makes a sub musical or not musical? I like listening to rap/hip-hop but eventually i get bored and put on rap, its prolly like 50/50, but when i play rock it almost sounds like my subs are choking haha idk it just sounds bad, how do i make em sound better?

more musical is the better it blends in. its almost impossible to make a 15" 3000 watt sub sound musical because it will outpower any other speakers in the car... a more well defined component set and smoother response from the sub is musical.

"smoother response from the sub is musical"

is there anyway to measure that or is it just a matter or liking the sound of the sub?

would an epicenter help? or some kind of pre-amp EQ??

mixture of both. your box has alot to do with it. the frequency curve in output plus the way it sounds to the ear.

muddy usually means that they have a long decay time. the waves/pressure hangs around longer then the note, thus not allowing the definition in the notes you want.

It is a very hard thing to deal with in a car situation. Getting rid of reflections off hard surfaces, changing orientation of the sub can help.
