I want to get a tripod and know very little about them

I want a tripod to go with my sony dcr-dvd 650 handycam. I want something cheap as I am guessing it will be used about 3-4 times a yr. Christmas and birthdays. Also considering a table top shorty tripod.

Are all cameras with bottom hole the same size and thread pitch?

Will I need to buy a mount for my camera to adapt or fasten it to tripod top mount?

Any and all suggestions on what to be aware of, tip, hints, would be appreciated.
